Searching for inspiration at Fleet Pond, UK, and found a series of micro-landscapes (valleys, caves, houses and chasms). I plan to use them as reference for my graphic novel (only on pages 5/6 for now, but totally worth it).

Off to the UK!

Going to be setting off for the UK tomorrow and will be staying for a couple of weeks. As I’ll be away from my trusty scanner this will probably mean no pictures until I’m back home. I’ll have my camera though, so I might post some crummy photos of what I draw :)

Until next time,

Random Panel Post #2

Page 3, Panel 1 Detail.

Work on graphic novel is proceeding well enough. After a couple of confidence crises during pages 2 and 3, page 4 marks the arrival of a newfound calmness in me. I only hope it continues.

Here Comes the Avatar...

Some more fan-art in between Graphic Novel pages.
I've been a huge fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender (and to some extent, The Legend of Korra) ever since I discovered it about a year ago (might be longer). I genuinely think it's one of the best examples of storytelling and characterisation in media. The characters and world-building are phenomenal and I never tire of re-watching the series from the beginning to end.
Here is a small offering, inspired by a song that's incredibly special to me: George Harrison-written Beatles song, 'Here Comes the Sun'. Here is a version specially remixed for Cirque de Soleil's LOVE production. TF

News Update

Hello everyone.
As some of you who follow this blog already know, I have been trying my hand at writing now for several months. I went to the Winchester Writers' Conference 2013 and got lots of good advice, and have since then been in contact with several lovely authors and illustrators via facebook and twitter.
I am very close to having a complete plot ready, as well as characters, theme, etc.
I have also decided that I'm going to try and make it into a graphic novel.

This is mainly because I have found that my writing is very visual, heavy with description. Through words I try and recreate pictures that I have in my head. It only recently dawned on me that perhaps I'd feel more fulfilled and less stressed out if I just put all these pictures on paper instead of just describing them. The story will be the same, after all, just in a medium I am more used to.

So there you have it. Here is a blurry photo of my notes and sketches so far, in lieu of more interesting concept art (that will come in the near future).

Thanks for reading, as always!

Nostalgia Redesign: Big Bad Beetleborgs!

Do you remember the beetleborgs? I do.
I must have watched only a couple of episodes of the show on Fox Kids before being won over by the (believe it or not) less crazy and more realistic Power Rangers (MM, none of that later crap.)
Anyway, the Blue Stinger Beetleborg was my favourite (so much so that I got a large AND a small action figure of him), so here's a redesign of the big blue lout.

Fantomah Fan-Art

Fantomah is a crazy, crazy character. From PDSH:

"Fantomah is a mysterious goddess-like being who protects the jungles of Africa. She has vast magical power, to the point of being practically omnipotent, and can transform herself into a frightening blue phantom/skeleton creature as well as a floating skull with blonde hair. [...] Fantomah often used her vast magical powers to sentence her enemies to bizarre and brutal punishments. For instance, in Jungle Comics #7 she transforms a band of greedy diamond miners who oppressed the natives into one man, then sends that man to an "unfound world" to be enslaved by hideous green fanged monsters, then sent into a pit of cobras, and then absorbed into a wall by a giant hand. Besides greedy treasure hunters and slavers she wreaked her brutal vengeance on such bizarre foes as Org, who controlled giant spiders with a hypnotic drum, and Professor Zomax, who wanted revenge on nature after being successively attacked by a lion, an elephant, gnats, a snake, and a gorilla."

So crazy in fact, that I couldn't help doing some redesign/fan-art of her!
(I have some thoughts on a revision/re-imagining of her origin story too, but for now here's just her new look) Stay tuned for more Fantomah goodies soon :)

Thanks for reading! TF
