Su-Portraits: The Return!

Hello all! I did some more portraits-of-my-friends-as-superheroes! Presenting Madeleine as Mana the Magician, Elisa as Snow Queen, Jonny as Jonny Cosmic and Kat as Fauna!

Madeleine appears to be a normal fantasy author, but she secretly lives a double life as Mana the Magician, a powerful sorceress who uses her formidable magic to fight crime and save lives on a daily basis. Her numerous skills include levitation, illusions, lightning and fire manipulation.

Everyone thinks Elisa is a passionate, sometimes hot-heated young woman... which is presisely why nobody would ever expect that she is in reality the Cryonic Crusader, The Snow Queen! After a freak accident involving an air conditioner and a faulty telephone charger - the wire chewed by her pet rabbit - Elisa developed amazing ice and frost-based superpowers. She can cover her body with protective ice crystals as well as fashion ice-weapons and blades. She can also summon strong icy winds to freeze any super-criminal on the spot!

Young science-fan Jonny was lucky enough to win a contest for the first passenger shuttle flight to interplanetary space. While on board the X-Gaia 1, he decided to explore the viewing deck. Suddenly, he came into contact with a wandering alien plant-form called the Cosmea Sideralis. In actuality a hyper-intelligent symbiote, it bonded with him, granting him astonishing photo-synthesis-fueled cosmic powers, including flight, super-strength and energy blasts.

Zoologist and Conservationist Kat was accidentally exposed to an experimental mutagen gas while working at the high-tec PanimaTech Zoology Institute. The gas gifted her with the power of transforming her body - or parts of it - into various animals. She now fights crime as well as protecting nature and combating animal cruelty under the superhero guise of Fauna!

Natalie Riess's Snarlbear

Here is some fan-art for Natalie Riess's ongoing fantasy webcomic: Snarlbear! I highly recommend it! Here is the titular character, Daisy Snarlbear, monster-puncher for hire!

Bird Tamer

Here's a sketch of a bird-taming explorer/adventurer girl with robot leg and weird bird. Decided to do it all just in shades of brown, to see how it looked. I think it turned out quite nicely :)

Vibe (Carlos Valdés on CW's The Flash)

I've made it no secret how much a fan I am of the CW's Flash tv series. I watched the series 1 finale last night and it was, predictably, fantastic.
One of my favourite characters on the show is Cisco Ramon, played by Carlos Valdés. In the comics, Cisco is the civilian alter-ego of the superhero Vibe, who has sonic and vibration-related powers. In the finale, they alluded to Cisco's superheroic future, so I thought I'd do a design for what I think might be a possible outfit for Vibe on the show. I tried to incorporate the colour scheme from the comics, as well as adding in a reference to the Pied Piper's sonic gauntlets: I imagine that if, like in the comics, the Piper turns good, he might lend Cisco some help in designing some tech that would augment his powers.

Public Domain Superhero Redesign: Fantomah (2.0)

Fantomah (Fletcher Hanks, 1940) is such an intriguing character I just had to do another redesign/re-imagining of her.

The year is 1985. Annie Fletcher is, to the outside world, a popular seventeen-year-old high school girl. She's a cheer-leader, prize-winning gymnast and has been voted the prettiest girl in Doyle High three years running. Her friends, family and teachers think they know all about Annie Fletcher... but Annie has a darker side.
After receiving a mysterious amulet in the post from a long forgotten relative, Annie becomes possessed by the vengeful spirit of an ancient jungle goddess... a goddess hell-bent on punishing the wicked. At night, Annie Fletcher transforms into a gaunt, ghost-like creature, with vast magical powers including flight, transformation and hypnosis. Annie's alter-ego soon takes on a new name for herself... Fantomah! The two are often in conflict within Annie's mind, not just fighting over a body, but holding radically different values and beliefs. Now Annie must balance her carefully controlled social and school life, with her new, more dangerous night-time exploits, taking on criminals and the forces of evil.

Probo the Intrepid

Here's a little random sci-fi/fantasy character: a sort of elephant alien explorer wizard, equipped with utility belt and crystal wand/torch.

Unda the Wise-Woman

I've been working on writing the plot outline and rough pencils of a webcomic for several months now. I'll only start inking and posting things once I'm happy with the overall plot and I've got all my ideas straightened out. However, I think a small teaser might be alright for now.
This is one of the main characters in the story, Unda (pronounced Oo-ndah). I might tweak the colours of her clothes later on, but overall I'd say the design is set.

Lillibulero

Hello again!
For more than a year now, I've been listening to and loving the music of Bellowhead, an amazingly talented group of musicians who blend folk, rock, jazz and all manner of other musical styles into something truly new and utterly captivating. I had the privilege of seeing them perform live at the end of last month, and it was one of the best , and most unforgettable experiences in my life.
One of my favourite Bellowhead songs comes from their album 'Broadside', and is called 'Lillibulero'. In the song, the Devil comes up to Earth to steal a farmer's wife. He takes her down to Hell, but is much more trouble than he bargained for. Soon, she's laying waste to all the little devils, 'bashing their brains out with a stick'. The devil quickly decides to take her back up to Earth, declaring to the farmer: "I've been the Devil the whole of my life, but I never knew Hell until I met your wife!".
Here is an illustration of the mighty farmer's wife, showing the devils what for.

Goblinz Pattern (Nice&Fancy)

More goblins!
I've commissioned a waistcoat from mum, but we decided that it needed a particular, personalised fabric. So, I drew some goblin faces and the wonderful Dawn Clarkson, pattern-maker extraordinaire, developed them into a lovely pattern which you can now order on Spoonflower!

Goblin Keyring

I drew a couple of goblin key-keepers to decorate a new keyring for my house keys. I quite like how it's turned out, so if I can find some more blank keyring picture holders I'll do some more, perhaps even to sell :) Either way, here they are.

Creatures of Harmatia: the Red Cap

Here's another piece of fan-art for Madeleine Vaughan's new fantasy novel, The Sons of Thestian. This time, I'm drawing one of the creatures that appear in the book, namely the gruesome Red Cap!

"A little over two feet tall, with gnarled skin and talons on each hand, the creature was like nothing Jionathan had ever seen before. Its eyes were huge, impossibly so, and completely red, with only a tiny slit of a pupil in each. Its teeth were also long, protruding from its mouth in layers, forming an almost beak which compensated for its lack of a nose, a single split at the top lip serving as a nostril.
It was naked, but for two things, a pair of iron-shod boots which it wore proudly and a cap - red with fresh blood which stained the visible outer rim of its leathery scalp. It held a pikestaff in its hands."
  - M.E. Vaughan 'The Sons of Thestian', Ch. 8
